Er is ooit een boek geschreven met als titel ‘Hell's Best Kept Secret‘. De boodschap ervan is dat we bij evangelisatie weer zouden benadrukken dat de hel het eeuwig oordeel van de heilige God is over een zondaar. De reden daarvoor is dat de schrijver meent dat de satan gelukt is de ongelovigen wijs te maken dat de hel niet bestaat en dat wanneer er al een hiernamaals is, het er goed toeven zal zijn. In die zin is de titel van het boek ook te verklaren: de wereld maakt zich door toedoen van satan geen enkele zorg om de hel.
The Bible describes the condition of man and says that all people know deep down that they are accountable to God for their actions. And they know that the judgment of God is just; read Romans 1 and 2.
“For when Gentiles, who have not the law, do by nature what the law says, though they have not the law, they are a law to themselves. They show that the work of the law is written in their hearts. Their conscience also bears witness to this, and their thoughts accuse or excuse each other.” (Romeinen 2:14-15)
Zo’n toestand, waarin je eigen gedachten je beschuldigen en vervolgens je jezelf ook weer verontschuldigt, is onhoudbaar. Dat is een doorgaand proces waarvan je welhaast krankzinnig zou worden. Een mens die werkelijk nadenkt over de dingen van het leven en zijn hopeloze positie voor God, heeft de keuze uit twee dingen. Je kunt je tot God bekeren en Zijn Heil zoeken of je wendt je tot satan om zijn leugens te geloven. Als je het eerste afwijst, kies je dus voor het tweede. In dat geval wordt datgene wat je door God gegeven geweten je vertelt, ‘vakkundig’ uit je ziel en denken uitgewist. We hebben daar al eerder over nagedacht en geschreven; zie bijvoorbeeld here. Hell no longer exists and death no longer frightens you. Satan's best kept secret, so to speak.
But for the people of God there seems to be another secret. It is the idolatry, which you might say is Satan's very best kept secret.
Israel, the people of God
When we read the history of the people of Israel in the Bible, it appears that they fell again and again into idolatry and the Lord God had to judge them. Even immediately after the Exodus from Egypt, while they were in the wilderness, they worshiped idols (e.g. Amos 5:25,26 and here). What God had said was not unclear, was it?
“U zult geen andere goden voor Mijn aangezicht hebben. U zult voor uzelf geen beeld maken, geen enkele afbeelding van wat boven in de hemel, of beneden op de aarde of in het water onder de aarde is. U zult zich daarvoor niet neerbuigen, en die niet dienen, want Ik, de HEERE, uw God, ben een na-ijverig God, Die de misdaad van de vaderen vergeldt aan de kinderen, aan het derde en vierde geslacht van hen die Mij haten, maar Die barmhartigheid doet aan duizenden van hen die Mij liefhebben en Mijn geboden in acht nemen. U zult de Naam van de HEERE, uw God, niet ijdel gebruiken, want de HEERE zal niet voor onschuldig houden wie Zijn Naam ijdel gebruikt.” (Exodus 20:3-7)
Their disobedience was the reason they perished in the desert and were not allowed to enter the land. Also in the land they have actually constantly served idols and the Lord eventually had to drive them out of the land that He had given them as a promise. By the way, He already warned them about this before they entered the land; the book of Deuteronomy bears witness to this in several places (eg 28:36,45).
In one way or another, the people of Israel have either misunderstood God's warnings or deliberately set them aside. Or should you say that the devil is far too clever for the people of the people of God? That he always managed to entice them with some simple ideas? It is probably all these things together that make the people go wrong again and again.
Surely we should notice that the people as a whole have not understood and ignored God's warnings against idolatry? There were always only a few who served the Lord in faith and obedience.
All in all, it's an incredibly sad story.
Israel, a warning example
But this sad story, according to Paul, is given to us Christians for an example and warning (1 Corinthians 10:11). It is clear given the context in the chapter that it is about the idolatry into which Israel fell again and again.
“Daarom, mijn geliefden, vlucht weg van de afgodendienst. Ik spreek toch tot u als tot verstandige mensen, beoordeelt u dan zelf wat ik zeg.” (1 Corinthians 10:14-15).
If we read this chapter with this command to stay away from idolatry, then we as Christians are obliged to pay attention to this. There would then be no reason for us not to want to know what this actually means.
You would therefore expect that the subject is known among Christians and that the Church would fare better than the people of Israel. After all, we now have the whole Bible, God's Word, and can read everything.
Maar wat je ziet is dat zelfs oprechte en ware gelovigen zich niet of nauwelijks met dit thema bezig houden. We hebben het druk met allerlei theologische thema’s, terwijl de christenheid om hen heen ten onder gaat in afgoderij en door de satan en zijn demonen misleid wordt. Er is geen enkele christelijke groepering of denominatie die daar niet mee te maken krijgt en toch zijn we kennelijk niet in staat ons in het thema te verdiepen en ons te wapenen tegen de misleiding.
‘Je gaat het pas zien als je het door hebt’
Maar de christenheid maakt een geschiedenis door die eigenlijk gelijk is als die van het volk Israel. We hebben de lessen van het volk Israel niet geleerd en nagenoeg de hele christelijke kerk is in de afgoderij terecht gekomen. We hebben het er al vaker over gehad en het is de aanleiding geweest voor deze site. Het onderwerp ‘afgoderij’ is in de christenheid een non-issue.
Het is satans allerbeste bewaarde geheim, dat in de Kerk compleet onder de radar is gebleven. Het Oude Testament staat er vol van en alleen dat al zou voor ons – gezien de vermaning van Paulus – voldoende moeten zijn om ons heel serieus in het onderwerp te verdiepen. Maar dat niet alleen; ook het Nieuwe Testament staat er vol mee. De meeste brieven hebben meer of minder uitgebreide verhandelingen over of waarschuwingen tegen afgoderij. Het probleem is alleen dat we het niet zien. Johan Cruyff zei het kernachtig zo: ‘You will only see it when you get it'.
That's why you might call it Satan's very best secret.
We don't concern ourselves with negative things
Sometimes you hear believers say that they prefer not to deal with these kinds of negative topics. They prefer to be concerned with the blessings of the Christian faith. The latter is of course fine and the very best, but that does not alter the fact that we may withdraw from what the Bible says about it.
Because how can you as a Christian survive if you do not know the wiles of the devil?
We moeten de gedachten van satan kennen zegt Paulus “lest Satan take advantage of us.” (2 Korinthe 2:10-11). Bovendien wordt het Woord van God “the sword of the Spirit” genoemd als onderdeel van de wapenrusting die we moeten aandoen “that you may stand against the wiles of the devil.” (Efeze 6:11-17).
De apostel Judas wilde een brief schrijven over het ‘common [Christian] Salvation‘; de positieve dingen zogezegd. Maar hij werd genoodzaakt te schrijven over de geestelijke strijd. Wat hij dan beschrijft zijn geen fijne dingen, maar ze hebben alles te maken met de invloed van de hemelse machten op deze wereld en ook op de wereld van de christenen.
Judas zegt dat we in ‘this last time‘ de taak hebben om zorg te hebben om de mensen om ons heen.
“En ontferm u over sommigen, en ga daarbij met onderscheid te werk. Red anderen echter met vrees, en ruk hen uit het vuur. U moet ook het onderkleed haten dat door het vlees bevlekt is.” (Judas 1:22-23)
